A grieving mother, whose newborn baby died following a string of hospital blunders, is joining other in the call to the NHS to learn from past mistakes and improve hospital delivery room operations.
The 34-year-old mother is suing the Princess Royal University Hospital in Farnborough Common, Orpington, after she was left in a triage room for more than three hours, even though she was presenting obvious signs of active labor.
This mother shared the tragic story that ended in the stillbirth of her young son to promote National Birth Trauma Awareness Week which ended Sunday, April 10.
She said, “To this day, the overwhelming feeling of loss and grief at losing [my baby] is indescribable. Being left isolated from medical staff and ignored during labor should never happen to a woman.”
This mother had been scheduled for a Caesarean section, but her water instead broke on arrival at the hospital and other distinct signs she was going into labor presented themselves.
Despite all the evidence, she was placed in a triage room for more than three hours and was even refused pain relief.
The mother continues by saying, “Only parents and their family members who have been through the utter devastation of losing a child can begin to understand the grief process.”
At the time of the tragedy, the Princess Royal Hospital was managed by Bromley Hospitals NHS Trust, which has since merged with two others to form South London Healthcare NHS Trust. Their authority has admitted liability after their full investigation pointed to negligence on the part of the original trust.
